ltd (8 1/2 x 11) 175 | The fcuk boutique in SoHo; Manhattan.
We've become a nation of shopaholics. Period. SoHo, once known as the Art Capital of the World, is little more than Boutique Alley now. Hardly anyone visiting there gives a hoot about Art anymore. Just shop, shop, shop ... for over-hyped, overpriced, poor quality goods (that will either be garbage, or need an update, in 6 months, tops) ... all made by underpaid & overworked laborers in distant lands ... and sold by underpaid & overworked laborers in this land ... so that a few CEOs and a select group of in-the-know investor/shareholders can make a friggin' killing.
Whoop-di-doo! Doesn't that uplift their souls? It's actually ludicrous. For a few pennies more, or often less, they could have a piece of 'original' art on their wall bringing them joy every day for the rest of their lives.
Today was the culmination of a God-awful week of sitting out a total of 47 hours in 90+ degree heat and selling to just two customers on Friday and Saturday ~ one of which was the couple I cat sit for upstairs ... for their own cat's 2 portraits I'd taken; the other being a lovely woman from Cleveland who bought 3 cat pics: Closet Queen and those same 2 pics (Dina & Arjun were kind enough to let me keep Parvati's images out so I could try to sell them again). No sales on Wednesday (up to then, my best day this year) or in SoHo today.
$132 total sales. That's $2.80 an hour just for transporting and selling them ... but MINUS $30 on water and other cold drinks and a little bit of food. Plus I have to give the city/state 8.375% in sales tax. Plus the cost of ink, paper and my time doing the photography, choosing the images, working on them, posting them, printing them, signing and bagging them. Oy Vey! Am I crazy, or what?
I think I'm going to put some of my work in an eBay auction. That was a suggestion by the famous NYC Street Artist 'Nobody' (and his friend Diane) of TMNK. They dropped by my stand earlier and told me to try it. Thanks you guys! Let's hope, huh?
